I use Xfce4 as my desktop environment, its light weight and simple and I've used it for years.
I wanted one window to always be visible on workspaces, you can do this from the context menu when right-clicking on the title bar but its a pain having to do so each time the programme is started. A post in the Xfce4 forum suggested wmctrl
